SUMMARY:End-of-Life Planning from a Physician's and a Lawyer's Perspective
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS\nAbout this course\n\nJoin us for a conversation
between a physician and a lawyer about end-of-life planning\, including pl
anning for organ donation and funeral planning. Learn how medical election
s in an advance directive actually unfold in the hospital and how lawyers
and physicians view decisional capabilities (capacity) through different l
enses. Join us for a lively conversation about these topics and more!\nPan
 elists\nLaura Mosqueda and Tanya Marsh\nModerator\nJessica Brock\nSponsor\
nCommission on Law and Aging\nProduct Code\nAG2507EOL1\n\nProfessor Tanya
Marsh and Dr. Laura Mosqueda will engage in conversations about end-of-lif
e planning. Their conversation will explore the interplay between the medi
cal and legal professions in creating and executing end-of-life plans. Par
ticipants will not only learn about end-of-life planning fundamentals but
also about often forgotten aspects of advance planning. Participants will
improve their ability to counsel clients on end-of-life planning by consid
ering all aspects of planning\, including organ donation and funeral plann
ing.\n\nParticipants will gain a more holistic understanding of end-of-lif
e planning by considering legal and medical perspectives. Lawyers help cli
ents execute advance directives and indicate their preferences\, but lawye
rs and clients may not know what those choices actually mean to medical pr
ofessionals. A better understanding of what certain advance directive elec
tions actually mean in the medical setting can help lawyers and clients mo
re clearly articulate wishes and make educated decisions. For example\, wh
at does it mean to decline life-sustaining treatment? How does that play o
ut in an emergency room or long-term care setting? Participants will bette
r understand the need for medical and legal professionals to work together
to support clients/patients in making plans that accurately reflect one's
wishes and plans that cover all decisions that may need to be made.
