Professor Tanya Marsh and Dr. Laura Mosqueda will engage in conversations about end-of-life planning. Their conversation will explore the interplay between the medical and legal professions in creating and executing end-of-life plans. Participants will not only learn about end-of-life planning fundamentals but also about often forgotten aspects of advance planning. Participants will improve their ability to counsel clients on end-of-life planning by considering all aspects of planning, including organ donation and funeral planning.
Participants will gain a more holistic understanding of end-of-life planning by considering legal and medical perspectives. Lawyers help clients execute advance directives and indicate their preferences, but lawyers and clients may not know what those choices actually mean to medical professionals. A better understanding of what certain advance directive elections actually mean in the medical setting can help lawyers and clients more clearly articulate wishes and make educated decisions. For example, what does it mean to decline life-sustaining treatment? How does that play out in an emergency room or long-term care setting? Participants will better understand the need for medical and legal professionals to work together to support clients/patients in making plans that accurately reflect one’s wishes and plans that cover all decisions that may need to be made.
